High Pneumenarch, this is Shasvaasti Continuum cell 8547A3 reporting on continuing operations in the Asteroid complex the humans refer to as “Novyy Bangkok”.

After a successful raid on the Nomads Arache network, we attempted to infiltrate the Aleph Mayanet communication grid. We were intercepted on scene by a contingent of Nomad forces. Their tactics were notably different from those we faced in Cosmika and our intel reports it was a different commander leading them. This is most reassuring as it likely indicates that their presence here is mere coincidence and they did not follow us from Cosmika. It should be noted the Nomads and Aleph are often at odds, so their launching a raid is not outside possibility. Our presence in the asteroid remains shrouded for the time being.

The nomad forces happened upon us after our initial deployment into the sector, however as we had arrived first, we were able to secure the initiative in the battle. As this was an incursion into Aleph occupied space we opted for a more covert assignment of forces and less reliance on firepower. Our center and right was held by the core team of Nox troopers. The left held by an Ikadron, Med-Tech and camoflaged Mentor. Two of our Malignos troopers took up concealed positioned near each of the central antennae on the flanks and a speculo killer was dispatched to the central location. In an effort to better control the Taiga while we learn of their best uses only one was taken that we may exert better focus over their aggressive urges. After the enemy had deployed the majority of their forces our second speculo killer was able to infiltrate behind their lines and set up ambush position on their shock trooper with a missile launcher, intel notes these are referred to by the nomads as, loosely translated, “Uproar Females”.

Our initial strike was largely uneventful for mission parameters but was very fortuitous for disrupting the enemy forces. Our speculo killer was able to successfully assassinate her target removing the missile threat from the board. The Taiga creature, in a more controlled fashion was also able to press an attack and remove the medical servant bot as well as an enemy line trooper from the fight. The Speculo was able to open fire on the back line from a concealed position as well and scored additional casualties before retreating to a concealed location to once again don the guise of our enemies and sow further chaos. This killer will prove the key to the battle and is recommended for full honors as an example to others, as you will see later. The Malignos revealed themselves early in order to deploy the Dazers. While we did not have time to position the Malignos in ideal defensive spots following this, it was deemed a necessary risk to slow the Nomad advance and we opted to secure the first antenna.

The nomads were able to regroup and retaliate for the losses we inflicted. And retaliate they did. They largely ignored the right flank, and instead pushed the left. One of their genetically altered Morloks as well as an intruder spent an inordinate amount of effort to neutralize both the Malignos and the Dazer. The Malignos trooper was able to successfully avoid much of their fire, but under the near constant fusillade even his superior advantage in the darkness of the tunnels could not last and he was forced down into a spawn embryo state. With this cleared the enemy advanced up a troop of tiny robots, translators identify them as “Marionettes”. Despite their small size they are not to be underestimated. They were able to root us out of the initial antenna, remove our medtech droid (and his D-charges), and a final desperate lunge by one of them armed with a flechette style firearm the humans call “Shotguns” took down three of our Nox troopers in a single blast, one of them was damaged beyond the point of entering his embryo state. Unfortunately this removed our ability to sabotage the mayanet grid physically.

Seeing the damage these marionettes could do, our Speculo was tasked with eliminating their controller. Advancing cautiously and with sporadic fire to keep a Morlock troopers head down the Speculo advanced up onto the enemies central observation deck. Taking cover up there were both the controller of the marionettes and the enemy celebrity gunslinger wild bill. Of the two wild bill was deemed the most dangerous and given priority status. No amount of gunslinger was able to prevent our speculo’s monofilament weapon from decapitating him in surprise. A quick burst of fire then dropped the controller to deactivate the marionettes. Seeing an opportunity to inflict more chaos from an advantageous position the speculo shot the enemies heavy machine gun trooper in the back, this was also their trooper armed with a thermal visor which would cut off their ability to fire through their own smoke screens. Our remaining malignos took a calculated risk to place himself in a position atop a storage unit. A lucky shot from the enemy doctor found its mark just as he dropped into a prone position but it was absorbed by his projectile resistant weave. He then began suppressing fire, the Doctor again looked to shoot at him but the combination of range, thermo-optic camouflage and his entrenched position made such attempts entirely futile, perhaps they should train more in marksmanship.

The enemy response was weakened with the loss of such personnel. Their focus shifted from combat to objectives. Their Morlock troop was able to successfully destroy one of the antennas, while this serves our purposes in the long term, being unable to sabotage the antennae ourselves robbed us of crucial data gleaned from its destruction. Another enemy trooper revealed itself on our right flank. He was more concerned with eliminating our observational Nox trooper than securing the antennae nearest him. A combination of cover and camoflage meant he was able to gain an advantageous position and drop the Nox into a spawn embryo state. Our medical servant was next to him but with the loss of the Med-tech droid nothing could be done. However such bravado would also prove his undoing, the Malignos troopers suppressive fire would catch him in the back of the dead through a doorway, not in time to prevent the damage to our Nox trooper, but preventing the enemy from causing further back line damage. An enemy morlok trooper was also able to incapacitate our speculo killer thanks to their enhanced aggression capabilities. This proved detrimental but we were able to overcome it.

Sensors indicated an incoming detachment of Aleph forces. Despite the nomad threat, we needed to act quickly in securing our objectives to make a timely exfiltration. Utilizing the remainder of our command initiatives we reorganized our troops to put them to the best effect. Our hunter-killer nox trooper rushed the designated target and a burst of machine gun fire was able to annihilate it. Though exposed from his run the trooper was in a valuable position and again the risk was deemed acceptable. Our right flank malignos was instrumental in securing access to three antennae before entering an exposed suppressive fire position to defend. Such was was not without risk he had very little time to accomplish this and each tapping of the antennae needed to be performed without error as there would be no time to return to one should the process fail. The speculo killer activated her integrated medical device and was able to recover. Further adding to her heroics and contributions to this battle, the fight would not have been won without her selfless efforts to advance the continuum. Standing up she was able to take aim at the enemy doctor and in a brilliant feat of marksmanship took it down, then took up a suppressive position to deter the enemy shifting to our right flank.

With the loss of their physician, and likely their knowledge of incoming Aleph forces, enemy morale was shattered and they began to retreat from the field. Content with securing our victory we elected not to pursue them and instead collect out fallen and erase our tracks, we were able to exfiltrate before arrival of Aleph forces but being unable to destroy the antennae we had compromised, Aleph may be able to tie our presence to the area using its considerable (for human technology) computing power. We shall monitor enemy movements and communications in an effort to ascertain if our presence has been compromised.

Agent Sheskiin has recovered from her prior wounds, her presence was missed but we cannot rely too often on her. This was a good exercise in her absence.

Lessons learned:

Do not underestimate the small Marionettes, despite their stature they are resilient and if allowed to close their “shotguns” can prove devastating.
Proper placement of Dazers can do wonders to hem in the enemy forces. They will need to spend a multitude of resources either removing them, circumventing them, or passing through them.
Our speculo killers are extremely efficient in disrupting the enemy forces, though it is inadvisable to take a pair of them unless the mission calls for it. Resources could be better allocated to mission parameters.
In an operation where we must destroy evidence of our presence it would be advisable to bring more than two weapons capable of doing so, and if only two can be taken they should be spaced out and placed into safer locations. The loss of them allowed the nomads to erase their tracks but not us. Too much of our weaponry was placed in tactical infiltrations, not enough in firepower, and that was not the correct allocation of resources given our presence in Aleph territory.

@Del S, It gets a “destroyed” marker placed next to it, it’s not removed. This is where the confusion came from. Though to be fair my group doesn’t use destoryable scenery too much outside of the specific missions like frostbyte.

  • Del S says:

    Tricksy alienses!

(Good report. As for the antenna thing, I think you can’t, if it’s destroyed it should be gone, no?)

  • DorianX2809 says:

Second Shas game. This one got hairy for a bit and I lost some crucial pieces which changed my battle plan entirely. I had to abandon destroying the antennae. Also can you re-designate an antenna once it has been destroyed? I believe you can’t, my opponent believed you could. We played that you could, and it never happened to it’s irrelevant anyway, but if someone knows the answer please let me know and if you could cite a source I’d appreciate it.

Found another piece of Halo music to soundtrack this bat rep as well 🙂
