The Darker Side of Fame

A group of men and women in drab clothing padded slowly through the abandoned ghetto of Novyy Bangkok. Normally the members of the mercenary group would try to hide their weaponry when travelling in the open like this, but the hulking Kriza Borac rumbling along in their midst kind of gave the game away.

The presence of the looming Kriza was also the reason none of the members of the group were taking the mission seriously. Even in this desperate place, no two bit Thai Thug would risk tangoing with a Kriza over something as simple as briefly treading in their territory.

Tanya, better known as, “Gutz” was currently trying to maneuver her ZondBot “Gearz” to give the group leader a wedgie. Pranks like these had already earned her dirty looks from the dour Tunguskans that made up most of the group, they didn’t share her Corregidorian sense of humor. She almost had it when the sound of a bottle breaking under foot spun her around. Standing not 5 feet behind her, with a sword drawn, was a Haqqislam Fiday.

Deployment

I apologize for not having a good pic of his deployment, I need to get back in the hang of getting more pics for these! Next game isn’t much better, but after that I will be back on my game!

Husker tries to get a Daylami close to my Securitate fortress, he misses the first 2 but sticks the 3rd. He also puts two Fiday’s in my lines with one deviating. This will be a problem for me as he is dangerously close to my Lt. with a model with a LSG. We are playing Countermeasures, he gets deployment and I go first. I make my Kriza my Data tracker and Husker makes Avacinna his.

Wait a second, you can't take Fidays in Foreign Company...

Turn 1 Foreign Company

I get first turn for the first time in a while. I am very new with Foreign Company and my friend Scott is finally taking out his “big boy” Hassassin list with 4 Mutts and 2 Fidays against me. His first Fiday scatters away into the middle of my lines tragically visible. Luckily for him, this does mean my Chimera will impetuous order run back towards the Fiday, right in the open O_-. I make the mistake and opt to cancel the impetuous order only giving me 6 regular orders after Husker stripped 2.

My entire army sloooowly turns around...

My Kriza spends the Data Tracker order to peek around and blow away the Fiday. I then try to use the Chimera to smoke cover the link team so that they can discover the Daylami. However, everyone who can see over there all fail their checks =(. However, the WarCors did his homework and uses his irregular order to discover the Fiday in the 0 range band, nice! Next the camera man continues to tacitly avoid filming the WarCrimes being committed by the Securitate and unveils the REAL threat, it was old man Fiday the whole time! The Kriza continues to display his disdain for sneaky lads and blows the Fiday away with a heavy pistol. That leaves the main pool dry so I switch the Peace Maker who enjoys a prolific but brief murder spree. It moves forward and discovers a mine, next order, it flambes the mine and blows away a vanilla Ghulam hiding behind a building. Next it wastes a Mutt across the table who opts to go KO (this will matter later). On the last order I get bold and try to shoot the failed Daylami with us bot out of cover. I am just out of range and the bugger crits the Remote leaving it 2nd level KO’d and the Aux bot DC’d. With that, I pass the turn.

You killed the AuxBot's mom! You are even worse than the hunter in Bambi!

Turn 1 Hassassin

I thought I had made a dent, but I was super wrong! He starts by smoking his Mutts up to the midfield with 3 of them camping behind buildings completely cutting off the middle of the board. Next, in an attempt to cut down on my ARO’s he uses the critting Daylami from last turn to try to pop a Feurbach Securitate on the roof, but eats 2 exploding shells for his trouble and dies in horrible poverty. Then, his link team sneaks all the way across the board and starts firing missiles on my exposed Kriza. In the first Exchange he causes a wound. Next time, I kill the Missile Ghulam, but his Dr.+ saves the day and gets him a classified. Next he brings in a Ragik right behind the Kriza risking the wrath of the WarCor, and the heroic cameraman stuns him in his tracks! He takes one last crack with the 4 link missile launcher and connects with both. Unfortunately the Kriza’s luck runs out and she is taken off the table. At some point in all of this he scores another classified. With the last irregular order in his other pool, the Daylami that made its roll goes on a suicide run for the Chimera. The Chimera goes down, along with a Pup behind her, but the Daylami is blown away by Securitates.

Turn 2 Foreign Company

Unfortunately this turn I don’t have ANY objectives I can complete (I need to squeeze an engineer into this list…). Unfortunately there is also relatively little I can do offensively with all of my strikers taken out of the fight and Mutts scattered across the middle of the field. Over a couple orders, the assault hacker Zero puts the Ragik in dogged and leaves him there. Next one of the Fuerbach Securitates takes aim and nukes the last Daylami left on the table. After that, the Doctor uses her bot and a command token to get the Chimera back up from KO. The Chimera fails to take out a Mutt who manages to get smoke off. At this point I am sad she doesn’t have a knife as I want her to go murder the Mutt, but she will get jammed by the other 2 =(. I use the rest of the turn to use a link’d CSU to sneak up the side and remove both Daylami’s but I am unable to achieve any objectives.

How is a viral weapon not silent?!? What, is the squelching too loud?

Turn 2 Hassassin

Most of my models are pretty dug in at this point, so Husker, being the cunning Haqq commander that he is focuses on the mission. Using my KO’d and DC’d models close to his deployment, Husker manages to score another objective against defenseless models (MONSTER!!!). Other than that he is unable to get much offense going so he moves his remaining models to the centre of the board to try to pin me in place.

Turn 3 Foreign Company

Going into this turn I am down 2 objectives and Husker still has a turn. The way I see it, I need to get 2 objectives and decimate his army to even have a chance. The turn starts off poorly. The Chimera rushes forward with her impetuous order to smoke the area in front of his link, if she gets it off, she can get all 4 of the link under a nanopulser in a couple orders. Unfortunately, even getting a 15 on the smoke roll is no match for my opponent critting with a rifle, down she goes! He has an HVT and a KO’d Mutt near my assault hacker Zero and I have 2 classifieds related to hacking an enemy model and the HVT. It comes down to the last order in the pool, but the Zero gets the job done claiming both! The game is now tied. I have 3 orders in the other pool to try to wipe out his order pool. Tragically, my Chimera, Kriza and peace maker are dead and the Link is too far away. My humble KHD Zero makes a heartfelt run of it, and actually manages to cause his Lt. to take an armor save as well as the Dr. Ghulam, but he passes both and Leila pops the Zero with her Shock rifle.

Turn 3 Hassassin

With plenty of orders left in the pool, things are looking up for Husker. Things go even better for him when he draws Extreme Prejudice with Leila an inch from my downed Peace Maker. He pretends to hem and haw for a second and then puts me and the Peace Maker out of our miseries.

Victory to Husker and the Old Man in the Mountain!

This reminds me of a movie...

Actual footage of Ghulam Link Team Gang Stomping Defenseless PeaceMaker

After what seemed like an age waiting in the run-down lobby, the door to the office opened, and an imposing woman with striking blonde hair beckoned her inside. Sitting behind the desk smoking a cigar sat her employer, feat up on the desk, arms folded, and with a face that would put the best poker players of the human sphere to shame. Hannibal.

“Do you wanna tell me why the $#!% the Man in the Mountain seems to have a problem with us performing a goddamn routine sweep!?” she blurted out, giving voice to the question that had been eating at her since they had withdrawn from the district. He just stared back across the desk, completely unreadable through his opaque glasses. “We weren’t even looking that hard, they could have sat on their assess, and none of us would have been any the wiser! Or dead for that matter…” she said trailing off as she realized she had just admitted to her boss that she had been phoning it in on her first official mission with the dark operations side of the Foreign Company.

“No, I don’t” he replied. “Instead, why don’t you tell me how you let a bunch of unwashed untrained Zealots prevent you from recovering Anton’s cube.”

“Recover? RECOVER?!” There was nothing left! Sure that Kriza armor is tough, but ain’t no one performing ‘recovery’ operations on red mist.”

The hulking woman behind Tanya moved to grab her, but a figure in the shadows stepped forward and waved her off, “Its alright Valk, she’s on the level with that, poor bastard didn’t know what hit him, but I got it right here” he said patting his aerocam with a smirk. “Nothing she, nor any doc in the sphere coulda’ done for poor Anton.”

Tanya recognized the WarCor that had accompanied her team. She had thought it was weird that a dark operations team would publicize their almost certainly illegal activities, but as she looked closer, she realized that none of the patches on his bags or cameras seemed to match any real network.

“This is Ellis” the woman broke in, “he keeps an eye on all of you in the field for us, to make sure you are all EARNING the good money Hannibal pays you”.

“And he will be watching you Tanya Toomes,” Hannibal intoned with just a hint of menace in his voice, “very closely”
